Affolder collects a Pennsylvania state title

Brothers Noah and Sam Affolder went 1-3 for their new school, Carlisle, in the PIAA Class 3A state cross country final at Hershey, Pa.

Carlisle finished second for the best result in program history. Noah Affolder ran 15:33 to take the victory, while Nathan Henderson of J.P. McCaskey finished second in 15.48, two seconds ahead of Sam.

Council Rock North put together the strongest team effort, with four guys in the top 26. Ryan Campbell led the team with his seventh place finish in 16:01.

Noah Affolder was the New York Class B champion in 2014 and 2015, running for Carthage.

Aislinn Devlin from Downingtown West was pressed all the way in the girls race by Clara Savchik from North Allegheny and won by two seconds. Devlin was second at the state meet last year before going on to win at NXN Northeast. Anna Juul from Unionville was third in 18:11.

Cardinal O’Hara won the team title with 117 points.

Ben Bumgarner of Waynesburg Central ran 16:01 to win the 2A boys race. Dallas took the team title with 96 points, 20 better than York Suburban.

Freshman Taryn Marks of Greencastle Antrim won the 2A girls title with 18:56. Villa Maria Academy from Erie won the team crown with 107 points.

St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy won a sixth-runner tiebreaker with Elk Lake to win the Class 1A girls championship after both teams scored 103. Sera Mazza of St. Joseph’s won the race in 19:17.

Winchester Thurston’s boys put three in the top 16 and won the 1A team title with 62 points. Senior Noah Curtin of Mercyhurst Prep ran 16:23 to win the race.
